Evidence

To confirm my participation in D2 outreach I partnered with Santiago Sandoval and Miciaih Satter to assess the program. We met every Saturday for one month from 6am to 1pm at Miciah's apartment and the surrounding areas. We have videos documenting our participation and spent significant time connecting with the participants who were in their early and late teens. We also wrote a complete assessment report.

Reflection

The D2 Outreach program was an eye opening experience to me. The small and intimate setting fostered real relationships for the mentor and mentee’s. The set up of the program was incredibly smart, with each week providing a workshop on a critical developmental category. The fact the participants were being exposed to such a myriad of experiences and material at such a young age and for free, really is a testament to the program. This program is a piloted program only in its second incarnation. I remember thinking on a weekly basis, if I had the opportunity to be exposed to this kind of material, I would have avoided many pitfalls myself.

The material consisted of physical training workshops to show participants how to live an active lifestyle. It also consisted of culinary workshops that showed participants the basics of nutrition and how to cook for themselves. Professional workshops were also provided that aided in the development of participants interviewing skills; their ability to construct a professional email, and even exercised their ability to develop business pitches. There were also workshops provided by educators (Ph.d's) who explained the financial and societal benefits of working in fields like stem, medicine or law. All of these activities contributed to the overarching goal of showing these young participants how to be successful.

I think moving forward the D2 outreach can benefit from more funding and organization. While the program works wonders for the resources it does have, one can see the limitations it faces and how additional funding to provide services and different settings for the participants would increase opportunities for participation. I also believe more organization would benefit the program. Because many of the participants are so young, any stagnant time resulted in anxiousness and restlessness. While the program’s founder, Miciaih, does a phenomenal job on his own; the program would benefit from having other full time members who bring their own unique resources.
