Reflection
Maywood 2018 was an experience unlike any other in the program. The previous year was the highlight until this point and for good reason. Last year shared many of the same similarities, one of which was the ability to role your sleeves up and really work hard for a community. It provided the opportunity to get out of the classroom and make elements of the program like theory and class readings secondary, and the ability to go and work hard the immediate priority.
This is something I relish because I feel it is in this space that you test yourself and it is also the best opportunity to connect with the people you serve because it is by your sweat and fatigue and humility that the opportunity to serve the community is granted. In other words, you have to earn the right to serve the community and if you do not put your full being into that, you are being disingenuous to yourself and to the larger picture at hand.
This year added layers onto last year in that the day of hard work was not all that was needed. We had to draw from theory and class readings and discussions. We also had to look at the resources we possessed individually and collectively because without the resources we brought to the table this fair could not have been as successful as it was. Part of the genius of the fair is that each year, while the overall structure and goal remains stable, the pieces are interchangeable which provides a tremendous opportunity for variance and idiosyncrasies.
I enjoyed my part in the fair and I am happy with the effort I gave. I am also extremely proud of my cohort. We all worked together to take what could have ruined many fairs, an unexpected and heavy downpour of rain, and turn it into an opportunity overcome and produce a great experience. Moving forward I think it is important for the fair to stay in Maywood in some capacity. I understand it is growing and I also understand that the nature of the fair is changing with that growth. There is a very good case to be made about changing venues and embracing the growth. However I think it is necessary for this fair to have its roots in Maywood in some capacity for years to come. It is clear that the community embraces and owns the fair and it is important that it does not be taken away.
